HERE are the stalwarts of the Silsden Fire Brigade, looking especially smart and having made some attempt to decorate their engine.

They were photographed on September 12, 1908, the date of a carnival in aid of local charities, when they took part in a procession a mile long, described at the time as "perhaps the largest and most representative ever seen in the town".

This included the Silsden and Addingham brass bands, tableaux, members of the Urban District Council and friendly societies, recently formed Boy Scouts, and – a popular feature of the period – cyclists in fancy dress and comical get-ups.

This is another photograph from Kevin Seaton's collection.
