IN 1938 the Albion Cycling Club, based in Oakworth Road, Keighley, treated these children from neighbouring Aireworth, Starkie, Moss and Bengal Streets to a day trip to Morecambe. Two boys at the front are holding up their Beano comics.

The photograph incidentally illustrates the amenities of Keighley’s pre-war railway station, complete with toilets, refreshment room and separate waiting accommodation for first and third-class passengers.

Morecambe was popular in 1938. Among local groups having outings there that year were the Keighley Association of Engineers, children from Laycock Council School and the Keighley British Legion Club, staff of the Keighley Corporation Gas Department and 160 youngsters sent by the Bingley Unemployed Welfare Association.

Even the Keighley News staff had a day in Morecambe, but residents of the new Woodhouse estate showed some originality when they treated their children to a trip to Redcar instead.
