LONG aprons were obviously the norm for shop assistants a century or so ago.

This was Sam Laycock's carefully-arranged stall in Keighley Market, selling fish from Grimsby, "fresh daily", and English-fed turkeys and geese.

Sam Laycock had started business in Low Street in partnership with his father-in-law John Wilson before setting-up in the market. He died aged 57 in 1918.

"Of a retiring disposition, he was a highly respected member of the business community of the town," said the Keighley News of the time, noting also his connection with Temple Street Wesleyan Methodist Chapel.

His business continued as Sam Laycock and Son.
