THE fact that the Famous Army Stores could hold a bargain Overall Fortnight says something about the type and availability of work in Keighley 50 and more years ago.

The shop is "doubling the purchase" of customers spending more than 25 shillings on overalls or what would then be working jeans. Everything in the window is meticulously priced.

This row of shops at the top of Keighley's old market was to be demolished in 1971, along with the market itself, dating from 1833. Keighley lost other historical buildings around this time, including the original Mechanics' Institute of 1834 (later the Yorkshire Penny Bank) and the Bar Lane toll-house at Stockbridge.
