THIS jolly moment was photographed at a tea-party in a sunny garden at Long Lee, probably held to celebrate the coronation of King Edward VII on August 9, 1902.

Mrs Mary Beaumont, of Braithwaite Edge Road, who loaned the original many years ago, thought the gentleman towards the left was called John Slater, and the others were members of the Slater and related Miller families.

Straw hats were then fashionable for summer wear, and neat dressers kept them in pristine condition. When my grandfather opened a shop up Oakworth Road in 1899, one of his early selling lines was straw hat polish!

On this Coronation Day an estimated 30,000 lined the streets of Keighley to watch a procession of 30 historical tableaux, and Sir Swire Smith laid a memorial stone on the site of our Carnegie Free Library.

Such public events tend to be well-documented, but it is refreshing to be reminded of this informal moment during a private get-together.
