THIS concert party poses on a pulpit area converted to a stage at Fell Lane Methodist Chapel in the 1920s. Audiences could contemplate a “Worship The Lord” text on the wall behind.

The group includes well-known Fell Lane names of an earlier generation. On the back row, from left, stand Allan Shackleton, H Harker, J Shires, J Rhodes, Ellis Brown, J Shackleton and J Walker. At the front sit Percy Drake, R Hodgson, J Cooke, Felvus Sunderland and Edgar Constantine.

It is worth noting that in the 1920s these mainly working men could muster dark suits and bow ties. Two are even wearing spats.

Fell Lane Methodist Chapel had been opened in 1878, with seating for 250. By 1915 its Sunday School attracted 113 scholars with 21 teachers. It closed for worship in 1990 and was converted into flats.
