THIS detailed view from the parish church tower offers a birds-eye panorama of Keighley at a period of transition.
The fine 1890s premises along the left-hand side of North Street have been set back from the line of their predecessors, but the roadway itself has not yet been widened, hence the broad pavement, still obstructed by trees from former gardens, and the lamps along the middle of the thorough fare. In the left foreground a gap waits to be built in.
Prominent buildings, from left to right across the middle of the view, include the Devonshire Street Congregational Chapel, the Temperance Hall of 1896, the Mechanics’ Institute with a clock in its tower presented in 1892, and the tall spire of the United Methodist Free Church rising behind the paler School Board Offices of 1893.
To the left of the further foliage opposite the Mechanics’ Institute, the Carnegie Public Library, opened in 1904, has yet to be built.
