IN 1921 Keighley worsted machine makers Prince Smith and Son enjoyed this canteen at their Burlington Shed, enabling their workers to enjoy “substantial meals at reasonable prices, and which may be consumed in comfortable surroundings”.

Diners sat four to a table, and 500 at a time could be accommodated. “Efficient cooks are employed,” the in-house Prince Smith Journal reassured.

Canteen management was in the hands of a workmen’s committee, chaired by a foreman and run on a self-supporting basis. Dinner-hour recreation was also provided “in the form of piano, billiards, cards and other games”. Whist drives, concerts and dances were held there during the winter months.
