THESE two chars-a-banc belonging to the local motor haulage firm of Keighley Brothers were photographed outside the New Queen’s Theatre, presumably at the start of a day trip.

The smart velvet-collared overcoat worn by a man standing at the back of the nearer vehicle may suggest that the passengers shared a theatrical connection.

The nearer char-a-banc, acquired by Keighley Brothers in 1920, has new pneumatic tyres whereas those of the other are still the solid type.

Keighley Brothers were to be taken over in 1928 by the West Yorkshire Road Car Company, their Anvil Street garage providing the basic site of our present bus garage.

Although the New Queen’s Theatre had been so named in 1900 to distinguish it from a predecessor called the Queen’s Theatre, and had been renamed the Hippodrome in 1909, it remained popularly the Queen’s Theatre as seen here in the stylish glass lettering on its imposing façade.
