STILL semi-rural Lawkholme appears here on a photograph taken on March 15, 1902, during the first round of the Northern Union Cup competition, when Keighley played Broughton Rangers, the then Northern League champions.
This attracted a then-record attendance of nearly 7,000, for whom “the tedium of waiting was beguiled by Marriner’s Band”. Fifty wagons were requisitioned and arranged round three sides of the ground for spectators to stand on for a better view.
The basic admission charge was sixpence for men and threepence for boys, but you paid sixpence extra in the Bowling Green Enclosure, and a shilling extra in the grandstand.
“Keighley lose the first round,” headlined the local press afterwards “but play a wonderful game”. The score was 15-7.
