THIS was a Catholic social gathering in 1931. The priest seated in the middle was the rector of St Anne’s, the Right Rev Monsignor Provost Joseph Francis Russell, the redoubtable head of the Catholic Church in Keighley for 40 years.
He had been appointed a domestic prelate in 1931, a post which carried the title ‘the Right Rev Monsignor’.
Father Russell – as he was popularly known – had come to Keighley from Heckmondwike in 1905, remaining here until his death aged 78 in 1945. He is still remembered for his part in quelling a rampaging Keighley mob during anti-German riots in 1914.
The photograph has been supplied by Mrs Maureen Jackson, of Fell Lane, Keighley.
