MIKE Pearmain, of Lower Height Farm in Stanbury, has sent in this bizarre photograph in the hope a reader may recognise somebody in the group, or be able to explain what is going on.

It was taken by Haworth photographer Fred Shuttleworth outside Lower Height Farm, probably between 1910 and 1920, when the premises are thought to have been unoccupied.

It may represent the cast of some entertainment, or more likely it’s a bit of fun and mild cross-dressing. At least three women have exchanged headgear with the men, and their pointed smoking – or pretending to smoke – cigarettes was presumably regarded as a masculine habit.

One man holds a feather duster, another some bedding, the bearded man is pretending to be a woman with a shoulder-wrap, and the fourth man seems to be minding the baby. The man at the far left lacks a woman’s hat but has a basket on his head.

It may just be relevant that a version of Wuthering Heights was filmed locally in 1920, bringing actors and film crews on to our moors. And this photo appeared on a postcard.
