MAYORS and mayoresses of the former Borough of Keighley had busy years of office.
Posed groups like these appeared in large numbers week by week in the pages of the Keighley News.
This photograph, which includes Mayor and Mayoress Councillor and Mrs Harry Hammond (1959-60), was taken by the Keighley News but didn’t actually appear in the paper. However, the presence of Mr T A Bruce, chairman of the Keighley Old People’s Welfare Association, suggests its context.
During a hectic couple of weeks around Christmas in 1959, in addition to their other duties, Cllr and Mrs Hammond attended annual teas of the North-East, North-West, Central, South and Haworth Ward branches of the Old People’s Welfare Association. At all they were expected to eat something!
