THE “BIG push” of spring 1917 is the subject of the latest First World War exhibition by the Men of Worth Project.

The group of Keighley historians have researched local soldiers’ involvement in the Battle of Arras for the display running at Keighley Library.

The Arras Offensive, which ran from April 9 to May 16, was intended to move the Germans back from their entrenched positions around Arras to their own Hindenburg line and cost the lives of many local soldiers.

Men of Worth spokesman Andy Wade said: “We will detail many of our local men who were affected in this series of battles.

“We will also feature transcribed sections of official war diaries which will show the course of the battles pertaining to some of our local men.”

The offensive included the hard-fought Battle for Vimy Ridge, which involved the Canadian Expeditionary Force, including several Keighley men who had emigrated to Canada.

The exhibition opens on Saturday, April 8 at 10am and runs until the end of May. Visitors can write messages in a guestbook.
