THIS Edwardian view of the United Methodist Free Church at the top of Cavendish Street explains why, at its opening in 1868, it was described as “a commodious and handsome building” occupying “the most prominent position of any church in the town”.
Originally capable of seating 1,000 worshippers, it was nicknamed ‘t’Cock Chapel’ by virtue of the weathercock atop its 125ft spire, the tallest in Keighley.
This chapel closed for worship in 1937, later serving as headquarters for the Keighley Squadron of the Air Training Corps, when it was distinguishable by the RAF roundels painted on its front doors. The building was demolished in 1952.
The photo has been supplied by David Kirkley, of Carleton Street, Keighley.
