A FOUNDER member of the Keighley Motor Club, Alec Shuttleworth, had started the original Tanfield Garage in 1912 on the opposite site of Skipton Road before moving to the Campbell Street corner, as seen here.
I shall leave it to the motor-car buffs to deduce, from the vehicles shown, the date of this between-the-wars view!
The motor side of the business was subsequently taken over by Messrs Knowles and Sutcliffe, while Alec Shuttleworth concentrated on bicycles, making his own brand of Alworth Cycles.
In 1931, in partnership with employee William Hill, he patented the Tri-Velox cycle gear – ‘Tri’ for three-speed movement and ‘Velox’ for velocity – though which of them was primarily responsible for its invention was hotly debated in the Keighley News in 1969.
A keen early motorcyclist, Alec Shuttleworth won the Coulton Trophy on a hill course near Goose Eye in 1921.
