JUDGING by the rough nature of a surviving wall, demolition of the King’s Arms and shops seems to have just happened in 1966, creating a space that even in those days has filled with parked cars.
The premises in the right background formed the backs of shops at the top end of Keighley Market, destined to be demolished in turn in 1971.
The buildings on the left of the cleared site, which included the old Midland Bank on the Low Street corner, were demolished in 1977, when the Keighley News invited readers’ suggestions on utilising the space.
These ranged from small craft shops or “a decent store” to a car park, a small park with trees, or grass and bushes without trees.
What we got, of course, was a literal ‘green’ backed by a car park.
