THESE children and parents were attending the annual Christmas party at Keighley lathe manufacturer Dean, Smith and Grace Ltd, in 1961.

That year’s mayor and mayoress, Alderman and Mrs JN Welch, sit towards the left of the nearer table, with Mr and Mrs James P Smith towards the centre.

Christmases were more restrained 50 years ago. Note the absence of festive decorations and the identical hats worn by some of the children.

Around this period the firm’s sports and welfare club organised a variety of activities including a hobbies exhibition, flower show, choir, amateur theatricals and a works newspaper.

Dean, Smith and Grace teams played in a range of inter-works competitions and there was even a motorists’ section which ran treasure hunts – not surprisingly, as James P Smith was interested in veteran cars and regularly entered the famous London to Brighton run.

The photograph was supplied by Mrs M Carter, of Fell Lane, who attended with her daughter and niece.
