Here is another of Keighley’s many former dance bands, supplied by Mr Paul Allen, of Epworth Place, Oakworth. His father, the late George Allen, played in Billy Normington’s Elite Dance Band.
Groups like this proliferated at a time when most organisations hosted dances, often coupled with whist drives. In the first few weeks of 1937, for example, Billy Normington’s Band played at a Keighley Road Club Grand Dance, in the Municipal Hall, an Oakworth Parish Church event, in Holden Hall, Baths Hall dances on behalf of the Keighley Amateur Swimming Club, the Park Lane Cricket Club and the Highfield Old Scholars’ Association.
George Allen sits second from the left.
Although seen here with the banjo, he also played the saxophone and the violin, later being a violinist in the Keighley and District Orchestral Society. He named other musicians, from left, as Cyril White, T Kaberry, Tom Joy, Billy Normington and Sidney Townend.
Perhaps readers can name the other three?
