Booted and suited for Blackpool

When in the 1930s a young Keighley apprentice toolmaker called Hartley Boardman used to go to Blackpool with his mates, they celebrated with a portrait photograph.

These two were taken by the Valente Studio and the While U Wait Studios, on Wellington Terrace Promenade. Notice the artistic impression of Blackpool Tower on the painted backdrop.

Hartley Boardman is on the bottom and top right respectively.

Obviously, in those days young men on trips dressed in their suits and ties. Presumably dancing would feature on their agenda.

Blackpool was a favourite destination.

At Whitsuntide in 1935 Anderton’s, of Keighley, ran four daily excursions to Blackpool but only two to Morecambe and two to New Brighton by way of the new Mersey Tunnel, with one each to Scarborough, Harrogate and Knaresborough, Windermere and Redcar Races.

The LMS railway offered a variety of cheap excursions, with Blackpool and Morecambe pre-eminent.

Even what was classed as a half-day trip left Keighley at 9.55am and didn’t leave Blackpool till 10.30pm. All for 4s. 6d.!

The photographs have been supplied by Mr Lee Boardman, of Raglan Avenue, Keighley.
