Four-square programme led to BB badges

Former volunteer youth worker Charlie Bhowmick has supplied this group in their Boys’ Brigade hats at the top of Upper Hird Street, waiting to join in the Gala procession in 1971.

The 1st Keighley Boys’ Brigade, for 11-year-olds, had been formed in 1960, with the Life Guards for eight-year-olds the following year.

“They worked on a four-square programme”, says Mr Bhowmick, “Spiritual, educational, physical and social, and gained badges for proficiency.

“The boys attended a monthly parade service at Temple Street Methodist Chapel. Later we moved into the Central Hall, Alice Street, and incorporated boys from Whinburn Special School.”

Activities included a drum and bugle band, canoeing competitions and summer camps as far afield as Scotland and the Isle Of Man.

Five boys achieved gold in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.

By 1984, however, dwindling numbers led to disbandonment.

Most of these boys can be named. The front row includes Douglas Nutter, Ian Pilling, Mark Frances, David Hopkins, Ian Chester, Garry Tubman, Graeme McDougal and Philip Doyle; the back row, Peter Graham, Garry Palmer and Michael Shimmin.
