Importance of displaying wares at new Co-op

Displaying its wares attractively was obviously important at the Broomhill branch of the Keighley Industrial Co-operative Society Ltd soon after its opening in 1928.

A great deal of care has gone into arranging this fruit stand, while the CWS tea counter has achieved a balancing act.

The customer is presented with an array of slogans — “Tea: The National Beverage”… “Filling The Nation’s Teapot”… “CWS: The Nation’s Provider” — and is invited to save selected tea wrappers and exchange them for a box of chocolates!

Built primarily to serve a growing council estate, Broomhill Co-op was the 20th and then largest branch of its Keighley parent, comprising grocery, butchery, fruit and confectionery departments. For good measure, a notice on the radiator behind the fruit says “Leave your Boot Repairs here.”

Designed by the CWS’s architectural department, its fittings where possible substituted tiles for wood, as seen behind the fruit stand.
