Top hats mixed with flat caps

To commemorate the Coronation of George V, in 1911, top-hatted Keighley aldermen and notabilities, assisted by their wives, planted oaks in Lund, Devonshire and Victoria parks.

Here is one of the ceremonies, in what appears to be Lund Park. The lady with the spade hardly looks dressed for digging.

Indeed, when, at the Coronation of Edward VII in 1902, oaks had similarly been planted by former mayors of the borough, the local press had observed that “considerable amusement was afforded by the different ways in which the respective amateur gardeners set about their tasks.”

Perhaps out of deference to the ladies, such comments were not made in 1911, but this seems a cheerful and informal occasion, with cloth caps mingling with the top hats. After planting, Union flags were tied to each young oak.

l We are planning a special Memory Lane supplement based on the success of a similar one a year ago. As soon as details are confirmed we will let readers know the publication date
