Market idea is to be studied
Silsden Town Council will decide whether to launch a Saturday market in the town.
Councillors had a lively debate about the potential impact of a market for the town and its businesses at their monthly meeting.
A survey conducted by councillors Anne Brown and Allison Coward showed that a third of Silsden businesses were in favour of the market, a third were against and a third were either not sure or expressed no opinion.
Town mayor Councillor Liz Trainor said that further information and research was required before the council made the final decision.
She said: "We need to have a survey put on Silsden.net and see what everyone else thinks before we make a decision on this. If we have a say as to who has the market stalls and they are things that you can't usually buy in Silsden, then maybe. We need to support the shops in Silsden - they are the backbone of this town."
Cllr Coward said that each business would have first refusal of a market stall and that it was important for the town to have a Saturday market.
She said: "If people are coming into Silsden for the market, they will walk around the town and see the other shops. The market will be bringing more people to the town. We can't force shops in Silsden to open in the afternoon on Saturday and this market will be on all day."
Cllr Andrew Mallinson, Bradford Council portfolio holder for economy and regeneration, said he had just run a market in Bingley, which the shop owners were pleased with because it brought more people into their shops.
