Rainbows come out to celebrate 21st birthday

Rainbows from across Keighley came out in the sunshine to celebrate 21 years since the start of the organisation.

Members of the youngest tier of the Guiding movement gathered at Wynches, an expedition campsite in Burley Woodhead, for an afternoon of fun and games to mark their 21st birthday. Food and drink for the girls was supplied by the Keighley Friends of Guiding.

Organiser Janet Armstrong - who has been a Rainbow leader for 15 years, a Brownie leader for 42 years and a Guide leader for 10 years - said the ethos of the Guiding movement had not changed in that time.

She said: "We promote friendship among girls to make them able to be a girl in their own right, and fulfil their potential, and it starts at a young age.

"They do this by working as a team and learning to have respect for each other and respect for our country and other countries."

She added that there is currently a Rainbows display in a window near Boots in the Airedale Shopping Centre which includes a competition for each Rainbow member in Keighley.
