Finding the real meaning of life
John Yaxley of the Church of the Nazerene writes
Do people take much notice of you? There's little doubt in my mind that every person alive today likes to be noticed.
Such a thing gives meaning and purpose to individual lives and it can make a vital difference. I see the need for recognition in different circumstances. When I get home, Oscar, our cat, immediately appears from a hiding place, makes a noise and wants to be noticed. His purpose though is not so much to tell me all about his day as to be fed!
There are also the times when I play football with children. When they make a good move or score a goal they celebrate and want the rest of the team to notice them. Then there are times nursing people when they seek attention. Sometimes it's relatively easy to give them a minute or two of time. At other times it's less easy. Perhaps the phone is ringing or other demands coincide with the request. What is the right thing to do then?
Within the life of the Christian church, I think the most important thing is for people to notice and be aware of God's love for them and share it with each other. But it doesn't stop there! That love will then be shown within society, as Christians meet people who need to receive it.
The story of the Good Samaritan in the Bible is about two religious leaders who saw a wounded man in need of help and didn't stop.
Surprisingly, to the listeners it was a Samaritan who stopped, noticed and helped. All of us have the potential to stop, listen and do something practical to make a difference.
It has been great to see in Keighley, On the Move Mission, Night Shift, Prayer Rooms, and hear about a new venture, Lilies of the Valley.
Here God's love for people is practically shown and seeds of hope are sown in people's lives. There will be many individuals who notice what's happening. It can lead to people finding Christ and a real meaning and purpose in life.
