SEVERAL thousands gathered in and around the Town Hall Square on May 10, 1910, to watch the official Proclamation of King George V.
The raised figures of Keighley’s mayor, town clerk and mace-bearer stand in the centre background. They are probably waiting to start the ceremony – which was timed for 12.45pm exactly – as many in the crowd are still talking amongst themselves. There is not a bare head in sight.
Notice in the top right-hand corner the man standing on the roof of the police station!
The reading of the Proclamation was preceded and followed by trumpet fanfares. Afterwards the mayor called for three cheers, which were “lustily” given. The proceedings closed with the National Anthem, led by the Ingrow Council School Choir. Several neighbouring flags, which had flown at half-mast, were raised to the full before being returned to half-mast.
