THESE modest North Street shops used to stand next to the Picture House.

Their empty atmosphere here suggests that they may have been photographed while awaiting demolition prior to their replacement by Churchill House.

Behind them were builders’ merchants Emmott Brothers, former dealers in sanitary tubes and specialists in “plain and ornamental plastering, concreting, white washing and lime washing”.

Churchill House, home of both the Keighley Conservative Association and the Conservative Club, was officially opened in October, 1967, by then leader of the Conservative party Edward Heath – who, however, was “on a very tight schedule” and had to “dash off to Bradford after meeting members”!

Lady Churchill had given her permission for the use of her name for the building, whose facilities included an assembly hall seating 200, two committee rooms and an office for the party agent.
