THIS atmospheric view appeared under the heading “Autumnal Days at Cliffe Castle” in the Keighley News of October 20, 1962.

“Falling leaves make extra work for the Parks Department staff at Cliffe Castle,” ran the caption, “but also provide our photographer with this pleasant picture of autumnal sunshine and shade.”

The young mother with the pram was Mrs Elsie Scott, who remembers how carefully the photographer posed her with her children and the two gardeners raking leaves on either side. Notice the row of ornamental urns along the slope on the left.

The same issue of the Keighley News also carried a photograph of Cliffe Castle’s 72ft-high tower swathed in scaffolding for pointing work – probably the main reason for the photographer’s assignment.
