THIS homely little stall in Moss Street, Keighley, was helping the Spitfire/Hurricane Fund in September of 1940. It was manned by youngsters aged from six to 13, selling ornaments, pictures and home produce collected from neighbours.

The close-knit nature of the community is epitomised by their names – they included three Cannons, three Pearsons, three Andersons, three Taylors, two Conleys, two Hewlitts and two Meagans.

The stall raised £2 11s. Though such amounts may sound modest – Mrs Doris Naylor raffled a cushion for 12s and a comedian at the Grapes Inn raised 6s – they accumulated Keighley’s total of £11,600, which paid for both a Spitfire and a Hurricane and left something over for the RAF Benevolent Fund.
