THIS ladies’ evening wear provided one of the prize-winning displays in a Christmas Counter and Window Dressing Competition organised by the Keighley Industrial Co-operative Society in 1930.

Scoring 86 points, it gained first prize for drapery in the departmental section, closely followed by Fish and Fruit with 84, and Furnishings with 83. In recognition of their efforts on behalf of the competition, employees “and their wives and sweethearts” were treated to a whist drive and dance.

Most of life’s needs and luxuries were available within the Co-operative movement, although in Keighley the overwhelming demand was for foodstuffs. During the last three months of 1930, total drapery sales amounted to £2,412, compared with £68,952 for groceries and £13, 676 for butchering.
