YOUNG Elsie Greenwell (now Mrs Elsie Scott), a pupil at Haworth Council Junior and Infants’ School, climbs a ladder to mark the fundraising indicator for Keighley’s Warship Week in March of 1942.
She had been chosen for this Children’s Day honour on the Monday, when the Town Hall Square was packed with schoolchildren and the fund already stood at £585,000.
“On behalf of all the children of Keighley who are members of the schools savings group,” she declared, “I have great pleasure in moving the indicator and I wish Keighley every success.” Mr Thomas Boyce, Director of Education for Bradford, then gave a short address.
By the end of Warship Week, Keighley would have raised £1,320,126, representing £23.8s.4½d. per head of population. The town failed to win a National Savings County Championship Flag but was able to adopt HMS Marne.
The bespectacled man on the far left was Ivor Thomas, then Keighley’s new Member of Parliament. At the bottom right was Eric Hollings of the Keighley education department.
