HERE is another mystery photograph.
We don’t know whether the goat made a practice of standing on the donkey belonging to W Heaton of Oakworth, but for the sake of both it is to be hoped not. The boy looks like a tough young character.
Perhaps this was a one-off pose for the camera. The fact that the image has turned up in two local postcard collections – those of Kevin Seaton and Ian Brierley – may suggest so.
The changing value of working animals was summarised in an 1899 receipt ledger belonging to Keighley power loom makers and iron founders, George Hattersley and Sons:
Brown horse £13.
Lame horse £8.10s.
Dead horse 7s.6d.
