THIS view of Keighley – as seen from Riddlesden – was probably recorded in the earlier 1950s, when there were still allotments and meadows beside the River Aire and Victoria Park was considerably larger than it is now.
The abattoir appears slightly right of centre and, of course, there is no Aire Valley trunk road.
A magnifying glass reveals at least 20 mill chimneys. The clarity of the photograph suggests it was taken during the old Keighley Parish Feast holiday week, when the town was free of smoke.
“I remember,” wrote Coral Cook, who supplied the picture many years ago, “that as a young girl my friends and I used to climb up to the moor above Riddlesden during Feast Week, so we could look at Keighley as it is in the photograph. It was exciting to pick out where certain places were actually situated, and it was the only week in the year when you could see.”
