WILFRED Joseph Milburn, a native of Darlington, took over an old-established newsagents at the top of Lawkholme Lane after wartime service with the Coldstream Guards.

His family carried on the business after his death in 1964.

Milburn’s was recognised in the trade as carrying a wide range of stock, as shown in this photograph, taken in 1965 and supplied by Philip Milburn. The late Mrs Edith Milburn and assistant Cameron Kerr are almost hidden behind their crowded counter.

Chocolate bars and sweets and the popular Dalesman are temptingly accessible at the front, while the papers and periodicals reflect the period.

The Beatles Book appears less prominently than the Dave Clark Five, with its special offer of “super colour pics”. Billy Fury has a row of fan magazines all to himself.

Reveille has a pin-up on the front page, and the Weekly News headlines a story of The Human Jungle.
