HERE is another example of pre-war enterprise on the part of Leonard Hawkridge, who ran Leonard’s Stores in Bradford Street, made Leonard’s Pure Ices in his cellar and sold them round the neighbourhood from this three-wheeled cycle.

His sister – Mrs Sarah Ann Seeley, better known as Sally – demonstrates her cheery sales technique outside his shop, possibly in the summer of 1938.

Mrs Seeley, whose husband was serving in the RAF, had come to Bradford Street with her three young sons intending to stay temporarily between his postings.

But the Second World War changed the family’s plans and they settled here.

During the war, she started Sally’s Cafe at this shop, making 50 meals a day.

She later became a well-known Keighley personality when she ran the Circle Bar at the Hippodrome Theatre.

The photograph was supplied by one of her sons, David Seeley.
