THESE white-clad Morris dancers were waiting to lead a procession at the Sutton Football Club Gala in 1906.

This event, held in July to coincide with the “Sutton old feast celebration”, had been started in 1905 to encourage interest in “resurrecting the Sutton old football club of six years ago”.

“The procession,” the local press of the day describes this scene, “was formed at the top of Sutton, headed by about 30 boys and girls as Morris dancers.”

They were accompanied by the Cowling Temperance Brass Band, and followed a lengthy route via Sutton Mill, Eastburn, Junction, Cross Hills and Glusburn then back to Sutton.

Tradesmen’s vehicles, fancy dress and nursery-rhyme characters and decorated bicycles came behind.

There were prizes for “decorated turnouts” and groomed horses with cleanest harness, even for a married women’s race, with dancing at the football field during the evening.

A third of the money raised – £13 – was given to the Keighley Victoria Hospital.

The photograph of the event was supplied by Kevin Seaton, of Bradford Road, Riddlesden.
