KEIGHLEY’S Devonshire Park has for a long time been overshadowed by its more illustrious neighbour.

While considerable money has been spent on improvements to Cliffe Castle and its grounds, little has headed in the direction of its poor relation.

Few would begrudge the funds invested at the museum and its surrounding park, which is one of the jewels in the crown of the district’s tourism industry and remains a hugely popular attraction.

And there is, of course, an obvious ‘added extra’ at Cliffe Castle.

But however you look at it, Devonshire Park has been neglected. For a site with such an illustrious history, it is sad to see it in its present rundown state – a haven for vandals and drug users.

Moves to revitalise the park and bring back some of its glory have got to be welcomed. Ambitious ideas are already being suggested, and there is talk of lottery funding bids.

There is still a long way to go and much work to be done to see the vision become reality. However the will and desire is clearly there, and provided the public gets behind the initiative, there is no reason why it should not succeed.
