FIGURES showing a big increase in the number of weapons being confiscated in the district's schools will shock a lot of people.

There were 23 incidents in Bradford district schools last year, compared to just two in the previous couple of years.

By any stretch of the imagination, that is a huge rise.

The haul of weapons included knives and baseball bats.

But frightening as that may be, statistics can always be interpreted in different ways.

In the wake of well-publicised classroom attacks by pupils on fellow students and staff, there is much greater awareness nowadays of the issues and increased vigilance within schools.

More seizures of weapons could be a consequence of a tougher approach. Either way, there is a need for schools to remain vigilant to avoid any repeat of past tragedies elsewhere in the country.
