THE case of speeding motorist Kahsam Farooq – caught doing over 130mph on the Bingley bypass – simply beggars belief.

How anyone could contemplate driving at that speed, without regard for the potential consequences, is beyond comprehension.

If the vehicle had crashed, fatalities would have been almost inevitable.

Most people would have little sympathy for the driver, but unfortunately in these cases it is innocent folk who so often end up suffering the consequences.

It is only through luck that the stupidity of this particular motorist didn't result in a tragedy.

MP Philip Davies is well known for his outspoken and sometimes controversial views when it comes to the justice system.

However he is quite right to question whether in this instance, the two-year driving ban handed down to Farooq goes far enough.

Many will feel that a considerably longer disqualification – plus even a prison term – would have been more appropriate.

Magistrates, of course, have to work within set parameters when sentencing so can't always – even if they wanted to – impose the level of punishment many would deem more fitting.

Perhaps, then, it is time to re-examine that system.
