RELIEF seemed to be the overwhelming feeling of many this week as Bradford Council revealed that demolition is on the cards for the Cavendish Street ex-college building.

Whilst the bulldozers are now a good way through razing to the ground the North Street structure, any action over its neighbour had been delayed to allow for marketing of the premises.

But many years and a failed deal later, it has become eminently clear to everyone that the building is not going to attract a buyer.

There are questions over why it has taken so long to reach this point; surely a decision could and should have been made much sooner.

However, we must now look towards the future rather than dwell on what has been.

We have to ensure that the council sticks to its pledge to progress this, without any further delay.

And if demolition does go ahead, it is imperative that an appropriate use is subsequently found for the prime site – and quickly.

What we don't want or need is another 'lunar landscape' similar to the one in East Parade, where a long-promised, multi-million pound retail and leisure complex is still to materialise.

'Bombsites', derelict buildings and empty units do nothing for the town's image.
