KEIGHLEY seems to have more than its fair share of idiots on the roads.

From 'boy racers' driving around in souped-up cars which most of us wouldn't want to be seen dead in, to motorists misusing traffic lanes to save a few minutes, we get them all.

What a breath of fresh air then that the police have now turned their attention to Keighley after the massive success of Operation Steerside in Bradford.

Bad driving is not necessarily illegal, but the two can be intertwined.

And it poses a serious danger to other road users and pedestrians.

The early success of the crackdown here suggests that the concerted campaign by the force is long overdue.

More than 100 drivers stopped and five vehicles seized in the opening fortnight is an impressive start by anyone's standards.

Perhaps surprisingly, the highest figure – nearly half – was for failing to wear a seatbelt.

But the dozen-or-so pulled-up for using a mobile phone behind the wheel will not come as a shock to anybody.

Whilst the early success of the initiative is to be welcomed, there is of course still a long road ahead.

It is important the public plays its part in maintaining the momentum and reporting any incidents, and where possible providing dashcam footage.
