THE original Cowling Pinnacle, said to have been quite large, was built in 1815 by William Wainman of Carr Head Hall – possibly to commemorate the end of the Napoleonic Wars.
It was damaged by lightning in 1870 and was rebuilt by Messrs Bancroft and Gott in 1898, with all work paid for by Mr Hall-Watt of Carr Head.
The ‘new pinnacle’, as it was called for many years afterwards, was rebuilt on safer ground just over the border in Sutton parish and is in fact classed as one of Sutton’s listed buildings.
Mr Hall-Watt paid a peppercorn ground rent to Sutton parish.
With it now being 200 years since the old pinnacle was built, I was wondering if anyone has a drawing or photograph of it. I have never seen one and don’t know anyone who has.
I would love to find out what it actually looked like for myself, the children and the residents of Cowling! Thank you.
