NOW more than ever I am concerned at Bradford Council cutback proposals for Haworth.

With various Brontë anniversaries and the recent success of the BBC drama To Walk Invisible, this is surely the time to take advantage of the renewed interest.

We also have the Flying Scotsman event due in April on the K&WVR and all the other annual events that generate tourism and keep businesses thriving and, hopefully, encourage new business to open.

A national survey has shown that for every £1 spent on tourism, another £2 goes into the local economy.

We need a Tourist Information Centre. It serves not only visitors but residents, too. We need public toilets and an ongoing programme of general maintenance. If necessary, make a charge for the toilets at the top of Main Street/West Lane, but they are needed.

Money can perhaps be saved now, but it is a short-sighted plan, which will make us all suffer in the long term, including the council coffers.

If we are to escape the grasp of Bradford Council's stupidity, then we must make our opinions and voices be heard loud and clear.
