I REFER to the story regarding Oxenhope Parish Council – Precept rises (Keighley News, January 19).

Whilst I am aware the ridiculous rise of 35 per cent is lawful, it is to my mind totally out of context with regard to the austere times we are told we’re living in.

In itself, the actual monetary cost is not – as yet – great, but where will it all end?

Will next year’s rise be 100 per cent or 200 per cent? Who knows?

I suggest your readers refer to their computers and search ‘isitfair’ – the article is well worth digesting. It does suggest that in some cases, double taxation is being applied.

The matter cannot go on unchecked, as I am told the Government rules the council tax increase cannot be raised above two per cent without a referendum, whatever that means!

I have instigated an enquiry with our local MP regarding this matter and await his reply.
