IT IS appalling that Bradford Council is to increase council tax by 4.99 per cent when inflation is running at 1.60 per cent – Council tax is hiked in heated row (Keighley News, March 2).

Yes, that is more than three times the official rate of inflation. People’s wages and pension increases come nowhere near the figure of 4.99 per cent and so we are all left worse off.

The inflation-busting council tax increase is bad enough on its own, but then to come up with massive cuts to the budget of £32 million is just an insult to the council tax payers of Bradford. Our standards are not just falling, they are plummeting!

The cuts are going to affect us all and also potentially the tourist trade, which brings so much money into the area.

The closure of public toilets is a huge issue and will particularly affect the young and the elderly. It is also a public health issue, as people will still need to relieve themselves, and in some cases will have no option but to do so in areas where there is public access. We are rapidly heading towards third world status on this matter.
