I THINK it is unfair that all public toilets in our area are planning to close due to council cuts – Council tax is hiked in heated row (March 2).

Doesn’t this breach health and safety issues – not having facilities available? Surely, in this day and age, we should be allowed to have the facility of a public toilet being available?

What about events that take place in our towns – processions, music events, Tour de Yorkshire and visits to local beauty spots? This will only discourage people from coming to our area to support the events and effect local businesses.

How is it when on a visit to North Yorkshire villages we encounter toilets and better facilities, either single buildings or available in village halls, than we have in this area? And they must have a much lower population than us.

How much more would it cost on our council tax to keep these facilities open? Why have we not been given a choice, as we have with policing our area? I have been asked via a questionnaire if I am prepared to pay more council tax to increase the police presence. Why aren’t we asked the same questions about facilities? I am sure people would agree.

It seems 50 years ago there were more public toilets on our streets than there is now. Are we going back in time? Surely, it is a human right for everyone to be able to use a toilet in 2017 in a public place, if required?
