IT WOULD be hard to disagree with Graham Mitchell’s letter headed ‘Too many vehicles’ (Keighley News, March 2).

There is plenty of evidence but I am not sure increased bus use is the answer. It is true we have an excellent bus network but my experience is it is well used and any increase in passenger numbers at busy times would be likely to raise the discomfort level to an unacceptable degree.

Mr Mitchell asked “could my child walk to school”? Well, there was a time when they could and did but what is the situation now?

Somebody at some time decided it would be a good idea to invest in a fleet of buses and transport children above a certain age many miles to school.

I am not qualified to discuss the educational aspect of this policy but it seems obvious the release of all these school buses on to the streets of the town twice a day must aggravate the traffic problem. The cost of this operation must be enormous but it never seems to be questioned.

Finally, I would suggest the root cause of our problems is really too many people and I do not have an answer to that. As they say, discuss.
