I FELT I had to write to object to Councillor Martin Walker’s letter – Scaremongering view (Keighley News, March 30) – and put him straight on a few matters.

As far as I am aware, the marchers were counted leaving Victoria Park, which is where the statement of ‘more than 600’ came from. I was proud to be one of them! I’m sorry, I cannot verify the number of dogs! I was impressed by the huge variation in ages of the protestors – a large cross-section of people.

I don’t really understand his comments regarding crossing the road. The route had been well planned to provide minimum disruption to members of the public, even to the point of altering the finish of the march to Church Green, in order not to offend anybody by being too close to the cenotaph.

The marchers took the route from the recreation ground at East Morton, along the pavement and down Swine Lane, on to Bradford Road, again on the pavement.

We entered Victoria Park via the subway and left by the rear of the park on to Hard Ings Road and along Lawkholme Lane into Keighley. We crossed at the pelican crossing in Cavendish Street and headed along North Street to Church Green. What Mr Walker fails to comment on are the huge number of cars and lorries that ‘pipped’ and waved to show support.

I pass the site of the proposed incinerator twice a day, when I walk my dog at Marley (no, she wasn’t one of the 15 dogs!) and the only work that has been done is the erection of a massive fence around the boundaries of the site, which in itself must have cost a fortune.

I despair when I look across at the opposite hillside and think soon, this may not be visible.

I read the reports about the underperforming incinerator in Leeds, which has had a myriad of problems. I shake my head when I read in the KTC Connect magazine that Keighley Town Council’s planning committee ‘recommended Bradford Council refuse the application’. What are we, Bradford’s dumping ground?

I worry when I read last week’s excellent opinion piece in the Keighley News, which states that Endless Energy has not responded in any way to messages, fuelling belief it has something to hide.

I wish I had known Mr Walker was watching the march in Bradford Road. I would have waved to him – or at least raised my hand in a similar gesture!
