THE death of the elderly motorist who collapsed at the wheel of his car in Keighley was a real tragedy and our thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Details of the driver and the precise circumstances of the incident have not been released by the police.

But alongside the natural feeling of shock and sympathy within the community is a determination that the man's death should not be in vain.

Already, efforts are being put in place to try to get a publicly-accessible defibrillator installed in that neighbourhood.

And town councillor Ian Dermondy, who is spearheading the campaign, has made clear his wish that every part of the town should have one of the lifesaving devices.

Of course we don't know if the existence of a defibrillator, in this particular case, would have made any difference.

However, there is clear evidence that where one of devices is used, it greatly increases a patient's survival chances.

Plus, the quicker a defibrillator is accessed, the better. Minutes saved can prove vital.

Several areas around Keighley already have community defibs in place, but there are still many neighbourhoods that don't.

Let's hope those gaps can be plugged as a lasting legacy to the 'victim' of the Fell Lane incident.
